Officials at Perspectives Charter Schools received a letter last month alleging that special education students at one of its campuses are not receiving adequate services, and that another letter was on its way to the Illinois State Board of Education.
The same day, Chantelle Allen, one of the five teachers who signed the letter, says she was fired. The state plans to launch an investigation.

Allen, who taught at Perspectives Calumet Tech high school since 2006, says that among other issues at the school special needs juniors have not been receiving services that are stipulated in their individual education plans.

The situation raises a number of important questions, especially about the adequacy of special education funding. But the timing of Allen’s dismissal also raises questions about job protections for charter school teachers who report educational abuses.
Perspectives officials say it’s “disturbing” that Allen would “conflate” her dismissal with the educational challenges faced by the school’s special needs students.
