Kelly Virella

Kelly Virella covers criminal justice and housing for The Chicago Reporter. She was an associate editor at AlterNet, before graduating in 2004 from the University of California at Berkeley with a master’s in journalism and a Roy and Barbara Passini Fellowship for Promising Young Journalists. Virella then worked as a one-year intern at the St. Petersburg Times, where she won honorable mention in one of the paper’s monthly writing contests. For the next three years she freelanced for publications in the San Francisco Bay Area, before coming to Chicago in 2007 to do the Academy for Alternative Journalism Fellowship at Northwestern University.
