Latino Election Gains
Posted On: September 28, 2007Originally published as part of the September, 2001 Issue In 1980, two Latinos, Cook County Commissioner Irene Hernandez and 7th Ward Committeeman Ray Castro, held an elected office representing a Chicago constituency. As the city’s Latino population has grown, so have the number of predominantly Latino legislative districts and wards. The city now has 22 Latino elected officials.
