Latino Election Gains

In 1980, two Latinos, Cook County Commissioner Irene Hernandez and 7th Ward Committeeman Ray Castro, held an elected office representing a Chicago constituency. As the city’s Latino population has grown, so have the number of predominantly Latino legislative districts and wards. The city now has 22 Latino elected officials.
