Prime Time

Home mortgage data show that applicants have the best chance of securing loans through full-service banks that are considered “prime” lenders and that applicants have the worst chances of securing loans through mortgage companies that are considered “subprime” lenders. In 2003, African Americans were the least likely to apply for mortgages through prime banks and the most likely to apply through subprime mortgage companies.
