Candidates of Choice

Prosecutor Anita Alvarez won 14 wards in Chicago, including all 11 majority Latino wards. She also won nine suburban townships, including several in northwest Cook County, but her strongest showings came in the heavily Latino Berwyn and Cicero townships. Alderman Thomas Allen polled well in several Northwest Side wards near his home base in the 38th Ward. He also captured 12 suburban townships, the most of any candidate. Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. captured victories in 18 of the city’s 20 black wards and three south suburban townships with large numbers of African Americans. Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin won six lakefront wards, two African American wards and six suburban townships including those that make up parts of his 13th District. Alvarez, however, was the only candidate to garner at least 20 percent of the vote in more than three-quarters of the county’s 80 wards and townships.
