Despite a state law requiring some form of physical education daily, most Chicago public schools hold these classes no more than twice a week, and four out of five schools don't offer recess, according to a survey by The Chicago Reporter. In addition, children in predominantly poor and minority elementary schools are less likely to have recess than schools with more white students and children from wealthier families.
