Reporting to and in partnership with the Editor in Chief, the Development Officer will spearhead individual giving efforts through developing and implementing a strategy for securing individual contributions and managing a portfolio of existing Reporter donors. The Development Officer will set annual fundraising goals in consultation with the Editor in Chief. The salary range for this position starts at $50,000 per year.

• Identify and qualify potential donors generated from email subscribers as well as other sources, including the lists of other organizations and donor solicitation services.
• Maintain and update donor and email subscriber lists, engage existing donors and identify new donors, with a focus on increasing online giving at all levels
• Analyze e-subscriber and donor lists, focusing on how to use market segmentation to increase giving and engagement
• Manage regular communications with e-subscribers and donors, including drafting donor appeals, in conjunction with Reporter and other CRS staff.
• Solicit names for potential email subscribers from staff and existing outreach lists for the Reporter
• Build the Reporter’s fundraising board.
• Schedule and attend key donor and prospective donor meetings with the Editor in Chief.
• With a development intern, coordinate direct response (mail, phone and digital) fundraising efforts, including creating content and message and the calendar and schedule for appeal letters.
• Keep track of all communication and actual live contacts through the customer management system (EveryAction).
• Track growth of email and donor lists, providing a monthly update to Reporter and other CRS staff
• Represent the Reporter at events.
• Manage planned giving marketing efforts in coordination with the other CRS Development staff membership department.
• Manage AdWords campaigns focused on increasing donor and email lists; providing a monthly report to Reporter and other CRS staff
• Develop an appeal campaign targeting millennial donors.
• Review and revise donor page on Chicago
• Various other duties or tasks as assigned by the Editor in Chief.


• Two or more years of nonprofit development experience.
• Some knowledge of journalism and trends in national and local media.
• Excellent written and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work with minimum supervision.
• Experience with constituent relationship management systems.
• Attention to detail and strong project management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Able to travel and work some evenings and weekends.

Must be able to speak, read and write English with high proficiency. Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

• Solid professional experience using social media.
• Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office Suite computer skills.
• Experience using EveryAction preferred.

Basic mathematical skills required.

Work may require walking or standing to a significant degree, including ascending and descending stairs. Work requires expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including imparting oral information to constituents, co-workers and the public. Work requires the ability to be able to hear and receive detailed information through oral communication. Work requires vision approximating 20/20 either naturally or through correction with lenses and a reasonable field of vision.

Work environment includes occasional exposure to weather. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

This is a full-time position, and hours of work are generally 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday but hours will vary based on organizational need. Some weekends and evening hours will be required.

Some local travel will be required.
