Bernard McCune is the new acting director of the CPS Office of College and Career Preparation, replacing Greg Darnieder, who played a key role in ramping up CPS efforts to boost students’ college access and is now a special assistant to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. McCune was the manager of GEAR-UP, a federally-funded program that provides mentoring, tutoring and other support to low-income middle and high school students to help them prepare for college.

Ray Thompson, director of community relations for Perspectives Charter Schools, will leave Perspectives in May to become a consultant for the Asset-Based Community Development Institute at Northwestern University. The Institute trains social service agencies and other organizations to use the strengths, skills and local institutions in a neighborhood to drive revitalization. Thompson’s work at Perspectives, based on the concepts developed by researchers John McKnight and John Kretzmann of the Institute, was featured in Catalyst In Depthlast fall.
