PRINCIPAL CONTRACTS The following interim principals received four-year contracts: Anna Garcia Berlanga, Sandoval; John Jursa, Prosser Career Academy; Patricia Lewis, Goodlow Magnet; and Arthur Tarvardian, Taft High.

Donna Newton-Holland, assistant principal at Ogden, has become the school’s principal, replacing Interim Principal Sharon Barfield-Jenkins. … Carolyn Baldwin, assistant principal at Guggemheim, is now principal, succeeding Nancy Ellis, who retired.

Principals whose contracts were renewed are Brenden P. Kernaghan, Owen Scholastic Academy; Donna Nelson, Murphy; and Richard K. Richardson, Henderson.

Parasine Moore is the new principal of Consuella B. York, succeeding Michael Woods, who is the new chief education officer for Region 7.

PRINCIPALS RETIREMENTS John Mazurek, Casals; Allen Donaldson is taking his place. John Amieri, Nightingale; Assistant Principal Maureen Savas is taking his place. Effie Vinson, Melody; Assistant Principal William Norwood is taking her place. Essie Lucas, Tilden Career Academy; Associate Principal Phylis Hammond will serve as interim principal. Diane Kimbrough Grissett, Gompers; Assistant Principal Melody Seaton will serve as interim principal. Paul Zavitkovsky, Boone, has become an education consultant at the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago. Karen Carlson, formerly of the Intervention Office, is taking his place.

AT CLARK STREET Avis LaVelle has been re-appointed the vice president of the Board of Education. She has been a member of the board for four years. … Walter Briggs has been named the first deputy chief technology officer, a new position; formerly, he was director of technology consulting at Arthur Andersen’s Higher Education and Health Care Practice. … Stephanie Suttles has been promoted from manager of contracts and administration of Compliance and Vendor Services to director; she succeeds Anita Rocha, who is now head of Procurements and Contracts.

LSC AWARDS The Chicago Successful Schools Project will hold the first-ever LSC Recognition Awards ceremony, Jan. 31, 2002. One exemplary LSC from each region will be awarded $3,000 to put toward a project at its school. Applicant LSCs will be judged by a volunteer committee of education, business and community organizations; all LSCs are eligible to apply. Applications are available online at www.newstips.org/schools. The deadline is October 15.
