The Boeing Company has agreed to let Nora Moreno Cargie, director of Global Corporate Citizenship, become CEO Terry Mazany’s chief of staff while he runs the school district temporarily. CPS board members will vote on the agreement on Wednesday at their meeting.
CPS spokeswoman Monique Bond declined to provide details about the agreement until after the board vote, but Bond did say that the chief of staff will be donating her time. It is unclear if Boeing will pay her.
Mazany’s salary is being picked up by the Chicago Community Trust, which loaned him to CPS until May when the new mayor will hire a CEO of his or her choosing.
Not having to pay the salary of the chief executive officer and his chief of staff will save the school district more than $300,000—a tiny bit of relief for a cash-strapped school district. Among other things, Mazany and Cargie will have to begin setting the stage for dealing with a projected $700 million deficit.
This will be a return trip to CPS for Cargie, who worked as a press secretary for the district in the 1980s. She also worked as vice president of Communications and Development for Illinois Action for Children and was deputy commissioner for the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development.
She has worked for Boeing since 2006.
