Janet M. Knupp, founder and chief executive officer of The Chicago Public Education Fund, has joined a national group of business and civic leaders that is developing standards for an advanced certification for principals and teacher leaders. The group is an initiative of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which currently offers master certifications for classroom teachers. The new school leader certification is slated to debut in 2011. Recently, The Chicago Public Education Fund awarded the National Board a $1 million, multi-year grant to develop the certification. Chicago principals will be included in the first group to pursue the credential. A recent National Board study found that 83 percent of school leaders and 69 percent of district leaders surveyed expressed interest in earning an advanced credential focused on instructional improvement.  For more information, visit http://www.nbpts.org/
