The Chicago Reporter obtained housing inventory data from the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services using the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. The data indicate the number of emergency shelter beds and interim and permanent housing units in the city’s homeless service system. The Reporter attempted to contact each interim and permanent housing provider listed in the inventory to complete a survey on Surveymonkey.com. Of the 91 service providers, 20 interim providers and 20 permanent housing providers participated in the survey. The Reporter also used the act to obtain from the department financial information regarding Chicago’s Plan to End Homelessness and the number of individuals turned away from emergency shelters and interim housing shelters.
