The Illinois Department of Corrections projects that nearly 40,000 people will be released from state prisons during the current fiscal year, the most ever in Illinois. As the number of inmates released from prison has grown steadily the past decade, so have the percentages of those individuals who return to prison.

Notes: Recidivism rate is the percentage of individuals who leave prison in a given year and return within three years. Therefore, the recidivism rates for fiscal years 2002, 2003 and 2004 have yet to be determined. Source: Illinois Department of Corrections.
